Plants could tolerate drought with a plant protein that increases their survival

A study by the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) has identified a plant protein with drought tolerance to the vascular system of plants. The study has indicated that an increase in this protein, AtMC3, would increase the survival rate of plants in conditions of lack of water and it would improve its ability for photosynthesis. "This is a key finding to be able to adjust the primary responses to drought with respect to the whole plant without affecting the growth or yield of the crops," said CRAG researcher Eugenia Pitsili. The levels of this protein have not caused…

SUMMER 2023 | Three supermoons, two meteor showers and the summer triangle: all the astronomical events of this summer

Despite the fact that nights are shorter because there are more daylight hours and contrary to logic, summer is a perfect season to see astronomical phenomena. Few, yes, precisely for this reason: because there is more light and more daylight hours, they are more difficult to produce. But the few that there are can be seen clearly because summer, which officially began on June 21 at 4:58 p.m., is usually accompanied by clear skies. Thus, after the change of season and the summer solstice -the longest day of the year- the first full moon has arrived, which is also the…

These are the Catalan scientists who have ‘traveled’ to Mars aboard the Hypatia mission

A team of Catalan scientists has traveled to a 'Martian camp' located in the middle of the Utah desert (United States) to study what life would be like on the red planet. His adventure is the first of the Hypatia project, an initiative created to promote research projects, make visible the role of women scientists and, above all, inspire the new generations of boys and girls who dream of going into space. The mission has remained, for now, on the earth's soil, but one day, its teachings could help the first earthlings who will set foot on the red planet.…

The extreme heat of last summer causing 61,600 deaths in Europe, more than 11,000 in Spain

These figures illustrate, once again, how extreme heat has become a true "disease triggers" which, in the most serious cases, cause the premature death of thousands of people. According to this latest analysis, led by the ISGlobal institute, last year between July 11 and August 14, in just one month high temperatures caused a total of 38,881 deaths in around 35 countries across Europe. Is about one of the highest figures ever recorded for this reason (and a phenomenon that, as experts point out, could mark a future where these climatic extremes will be discovered in something increasingly recurrent). "The…
