At least 10 people were killed and at least 10 more injured in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, on Saturday night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
«Investigators are looking into all leads in this case,» Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide division said at a news conference Sunday morning, adding that they were reviewing footage of the security cameras near the scene.
“We have 10 who died on scene,” he said, adding that he believed at least 10 people had been taken to hospital with “critical to stable injuries.”
The incident took place around 10:22 p.m. local time (1:22 a.m. ET), the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
Police and fire units could be seen invading the area in a video posted on social media. Others showed victims being transferred to ambulances.
Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Associated Press that the shooter is male.
Meyer said at the news conference that more information on the suspect would be provided once it became available.
«As far as the suspect knows any of the victims, it’s too early in the investigation to tell,» he said.
The shooting came after thousands of people gathered for a Lunar New Year Festival in the small city about 10 miles east of Los Angeles of about 60,000 people with a large Asian population.
The two-day event features «food stalls with various types of delicious items, carnival rides and lots of live entertainment,» according to the city’s website.
The event was canceled on Sunday.
