Gradually, Colombians will work fewer hours per week. Currently it is 48 hours, but Law 2101 of 2021 establishes that in 2026 it will be 42. Of course, there are a number of exceptions.

For this 2023 the working day in Colombia will be reduced by one hour, that is, it will remain at 47 hours a week. This does not imply a decrease in salary nor does it affect the rights acquired by workers, as expressed by law.
For whom would the reduction in working hours not apply?
The first exception groups Colombians who work in “especially unhealthy or dangerous” areas. In that case, the Government can determine how the reduction in hours will be made effective.

Law 2102 of 2021 plans to reduce the working day to 42 hours per week, by 2026.
Another exception has to do with young people who are authorized to worksince they cannot exceed a certain amount of hours per week:
- Adolescents over 15 and under 17 years of age may only work a maximum of six hours a day and thirty hours a week and until 6 p.m.
- Adolescents over the age of seventeen may only work a maximum of eight hours a day and 40 hours a week and until 8 p.m.
The third exception indicates that both the employee and the worker may agree on successive shifts, “as long as the respective shift does not exceed six hours a day and thirty-six a week.” The employee under this modality is entitled to a day of paid rest, but not to a night recharge or for Sunday or holiday work.
Can the hour be reduced any day of the week?
In dialogue with EL TIEMPO, Catalina Santos, a partner in the labor team of the firm Brigard Urrutia, reiterated that employees can make agreements with their companies on what day they will work one hour less.

The salary will not be affected by the reduction of the working day, as established by law.
“Article 2 of the law, in its first paragraph, establishes that the parties (employer and worker), by mutual agreement, can distribute the hours between 5 and 6 days a week, always guaranteeing the day of rest,” he said.
In the event that the employer does not reduce the working day, it may be subject to sanctions by the Ministry of Labor.
