He also provided several details about these hectares and the steps to follow. This was what he said.

The Government has already received offers of 1.7 million hectares for agrarian reform, from which departments have they offered you more?

We have received offers in 26 departments. In the case of the Caribbean region, the biggest offers are in Córdoba and Cesar.

Are the majority large ranchers, farmers?

Most of the offers come from medium-sized ones, we have also received from large owners.

What are they going to take into account before buying those 1.7 million hectares?

In the case of Fedegan’s offer, we are only going to buy those that are in the Caribbean Region and Magdalena Medio, that is a strategic decision by the government because there are very productive lands that are underutilized, in those two regions we are evaluating 58,000 hectares that they offered us.

In general, the ministry set very clear rules that must be strictly followed, there should be no doubt about how the current owner obtained the property, meWe only have to verify it with the Land Restitution Unit, with the Igac, with Notaries and with the Prosecutor’s Office.

We have a legal team working to prevent front men from selling us land, that will not happen

It also has to meet the productivity requirements that we are verifying with our UPRA Rural and Agricultural Planning Unit.

Could some of those properties be rejected?

Yes, if they do not meet the aforementioned conditions they will be rejected, no doubt about that.

Where are the resources going to come from to pay the owners of those 1.7 million hectares and how much do they estimate they are going to spend?

Agrarian reform is a government priority. The resources of the State are the immediate budget and the indebtedness, this week a permanent work team was installed with the Ministry of Finance to refine the decisions on the payment of the land. Very soon, once we have confirmed the number of hectares that we are going to buy this year, I am going to tell Minister José Antonio Ocampo how much we need, I cannot ask for resources that we are not going to spend.
