With nearly 18,000 tons transported from Colombia and Ecuador to the United States this Valentine’s season, Avianca Cargo celebrates 50 years since its first flight loaded with flowers took off to that country, perhaps the main customer for Colombian flowers.
Gabriel Oliva, CEO of Avianca Cargo, to point out that «the export of flowers requires an increasingly precise coordination throughout the entire value chain to guarantee a delivery with the highest quality standards and in the demanded times».

Where do the flowers they carry go?
The most relevant destinations are Miami and Los Angeles, but in general we take them to the entire United States market this season. The most transported flowers from Bogotá is roses and carnations; from Medellín, pompoms, hydrangeas and chrysanthemums; and from Quito, roses and gypsos.
How do you make them arrive fresh?
We are the first airline in America certified CEIV Fresh by Iata, which guarantees the highest quality standards in handling perishables. Thanks to the integration and logistics with our customers and suppliers, we move cargo in refrigerated trucks, warehouses and aircraft. This flower is transported in temperature-controlled compartments both in our warehouses and on planes to maintain the cold chain and the correct temperature to preserve quality both at origin and destination.

How have higher prices affected you?
In 2022 there was a challenging environment throughout the industry that is believed to continue throughout 2023. This was marked by the rise in the price of aviation fuel, added to the increase in the dollar and inflation. We continue to advance our plan to become more cost efficient through various initiatives to contain some of the fuel impact.
