Traffic accidents: these are the most dangerous roads in Colombia – Sectors – Economy

In the last five years, during the June and July holiday season, 1,412 people died in traffic accidents, but most of them lost their lives at specific sites along six highways.

Of this total number of victims, 900 died in 38 critical sections of six road corridors that the Ministry of Transport and the National Road Safety Agency (ANSV) identified through a statistical data analysis model.

With the data on the flow of travelers that move through these sites this season, the plan was combined ‘Don’t let the road take your life’, a strategy on which the actions will be concentrated this year to prevent accidents, whose main cause is speeding.

In addition, other causes were identified, such as driving against the road, driving while intoxicated, and in general not complying with traffic regulations, as well as roads in poor condition. Most of the victims are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

The sectoral plan is made up of more than 1,300 uniformed personnel from the National Police Traffic Directorate (Ditra) and 3,800 distributed throughout the rest of the national territory; 25 mobile and 34 fixed cameras from the National Highway Institute (Invías) for license plate identification and speeding detection.

The road concessions will make a daily report.

The Superintendency of Transportation also participates in this strategy, and the actions in the field will be a charge of the road concessions.

The The six highways with the highest or the highest accident rate in the mid-year holiday season are:

  • Road Development of the East of Medellín (Devimed) or Medellín-Bogotá highway.
  • Armenia-Pereira-Manizales.
  • Road network of Valle del Cauca and Cauca.
  • Route of the Sun, sector 3.
  • Briceño-Tunja-Sogamoso.
  • Santana-Mocoa-Neiva.

The traffic authorities estimate that a little more than 3,800,000 vehicles will circulate this holiday season. The road concessions will make a daily report from June 16 to July 4, 2023 of the preventive and corrective actions carried out in the six prioritized corridors.

This information is sent to the ANSV to collect and monitor activities; and through Waze, messages and information about the 38 critical sections were sent.

Hypothesis about the causes of accidents

Armenia-Pereira-Manizales: drunkenness and disobeying traffic signals. Mostly motorcyclists and pedestrians die.

Briceño-Tunja-Sogamoso: disobey traffic signals. Mostly pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists die.

Road Development of the East of Medellín-Devimed: speeding, bad road conditions. Mostly pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are killed.

Mostly pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists die.
