They lift the blockade in Puerto Gaitán that affected oil production – Sectors – Economy

After 8 days, an agreement between the National Government and the communities will be modified to end the protests and blockades in the municipality of Puerto GaitánMeta, which descended from the transport of groceries, food and fuel.

The agreement reached will establish that guarantees will be granted for the non-judicialization and non-stigmatization of spokespersons and representatives of the communities that were participating in the protests in this region of the country.

Likewise, it will be fulfilled that on February 21 a follow-up meeting will be held on the actions and agreements that were reached to pavement 95 kilometers of track. A dialogue table will also be held with the leaders of the population.

In the last hours, the oil companies that operate in this municipality such as Ecopetrol, Frontera Energy, Cepsa, Hocol and Tecpetrol have launched an alert due to the blockade of the road that leads from Puerto Gaitán to the Rubiales village, which was putting the oil production in this department.

In addition, the load from the Cartagena and Barrancabermeja refineries was being impacted, which put at risk the supply of liquid fuels in Colombia and other countries to which it is exported.

Due to this situation, they stopped producing more than 49,500 barrels of oil per day in Puerto Gaitán, which represents 6.5 percent of the production that Colombia won in 2022, which was 754,199 barrels per day. Likewise, more than 5,332 workers in the sector were harmed.

Frontera Energy assured that, due to the blockade in Puerto Gaitán, it has stopped producing approximately 11,500 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) in the Quifa and CPE-6 blocksbecause they reached their storage capacity on site.

Likewise, it has proactively suspended all its construction and drilling activities in the area until further notice. Parex Resources had to do the same in Arauca.

«Frontera’s main priority continues to be health and the safety of its employees, contractors and the communities in which it operates, with a key focus on protecting the environment,» the company said.
