The suspension of natural gas service in the southwestern part of the country prompted families in that region to devise new ways to cook. Rice cookers, electric stoves, air fryers, wood stoves and even tuna cans served to make up for the absence of hydrocarbons and although the ingenuity is not despised, the service was reestablished hours later.
There was no shortage of those who ended up buying appliances to use for a couple of days. But that change in which the use of gas was left behind for a short time in the future will gradually become the rule.

Almost at the same time that the suspension of gas service was announced, the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) presented its annual report on resources and reserves, revealing a decrease in Colombia’s self-sufficiency in both natural gas and oil. In gas, the country went from having 3,164 cubic gigapies (Gpc) in 2021 to only 2,817 Gpc in 2022.
These data indicate that Colombia only has about 7.2 years of natural gas reserves. Before facing a potential hydrocarbon shortage and although the situation is worrying, the truth is that it is part of the natural order of things, since resources are finite.

Colombia has about 7.2 years left in natural gas reserves
Taking into account this context and the inevitable panorama that presages the reduction in the use of non-renewable energies, the question arises about how prepared is the country to face the changes and the truth is that there is progress.
Only for April of this year, energy production was 6,336 gigawatts (GWh), of which 89.48 percent came from renewable energies and only 10.52 percent was the product of fossil fuels or derivatives, according to data from the XM energy market.
In that same month, the sale of electric vehicles had an increase of 33.5 percent, with 315 registered license plates and although they seem few, the truth is that this market has registered a growth trend for several years, according to figures from the National Association for Sustainable Mobility.

These two fields are important for the transition insofar as they eliminate the use of non-renewable energy in transport and people’s daily electricity use and taking into account that the results are positive, When could Colombians be ready to stop using hydrocarbons?
For experts like Alejandro Lucio, this scenario will never happen, however, what can happen is that we become carbon neutral. The State wants to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050.
This goal is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, which estimate that the countries of the world will be carbon neutral between 2050 and 2060.
