Creativity is a strength of designers in all their disciplines. Therefore, after the pandemic, this was put to the test and left lessons that after five years of absence will be shared in a new version of the Lápiz de Acero award. Its director, Iván Cortés, recognizes that, although it was an ideal moment to generate many spaces for exchange and reflection on the profession, the path continues…

As it did not happen with other sectors of the economy, the design was easily adapted to the technological environment and virtual work, because it was common in this industry. However, as Cortés explains, many companies had to look at other segments.

The fact that a good percentage of companies eliminated the office and adjusted the way of working forced them to make changes. “In some cases, commercial interior design firms stopped projects and migrated to residential interior design with work-at-home solutions.” Remember Cortes. It was, perhaps, one of the most relevant changes in real estate of the pandemic that forced us to work, study and live locked up.

The design was adapted to virtual work.
It was an unprecedented time for most, andn which the creation of enterprises of all kinds, and from all sectors, as well as the active participation of smalls and medium-sized companies. Some simply arose as a staging ground to withstand an event ‘without an expiration date’, while others were consolidated and still exist.

Cortés, who recalls that the call for the Lápiz de Acero award runs until August 18, highlights how users were open to learn about and try new proposals and objects of all kindsgoing through meals and experiences, where the fields of design contributed with packaging, applications and countless initiatives.

The local industry is hit and this affects the limited demand for product design
Today, it is evident that there is a new, nuanced post-pandemic economic environment, with a market gradually recovering, but also with difficulties in importing at competitive prices. “The local industry is hit and that affects the limited demand for product design, although there is the rise of these small enterprises, of which a part will be consolidated in the future”, warned Cortés, whom I did not want to fire without asking him, how is public policy going on the subject?

“There is a lack of political will and design knowledge of those responsible for public affairs. We would take a good step starting by complying with all regulations: road or night signaling, or those related to public works, to name just a few… The next step is to educate or sensitize politicians about the possibilities of design”. POr that, it is not unreasonable to think that the return of the Lápiz de Acero award will serve to continue designing the reactivation of an industry with which we live 24/7.
