The media environment in Colombia begins 2023 with the news that Grupo Semana reached an agreement to acquire the newspaper El Paísde Cali, a benchmark for regional media in the southwestern part of the country, which suffered economic problems and accepted the business reorganization law on February 18, 2020.

The business was sold on January 10 after the businessman gabriel gilinsky acquire the acquisition last December of all the shares of Grupo Semana.
Now, The commitment to this regional medium implies the investment of some 12 billion pesos for digital transformation, sources close to the transaction said.
In recent days, it had been speculated that other investors had reached an agreement to acquire it, but finally the Semana group is the one that ended the agreement to acquire the 73-year-old newspaper.
The sources consulted by EL TIEMPO say that in the process the technological and editorial model of Grupo Semana will be used to apply the transition.
María Elvira Domínguez, the director and general manager of El País, described the operation as «extraordinary news for Valle del Cauca and for Cali the continuity of its main means of communication, which has served the region for 73 years. And more, under the leadership of one of the most accredited journalistic groups in Colombia, which, preserving the founders of the newspaper, it will transform it into a modern medium, in keeping with the technological, editorial and commercial demands of the world in which we live”.
Semana magazine, on the other hand, published that the group «believes in the importance of the regional press in Colombia, and reiterates its commitment so that citizens are always well informed.»
