According to the National Association for Sustainable Mobility (Andemos) in May 2023, 15,695 new vehicles were registered in Colombia, which represents a drop in
30 percent vs. the 22,435 new cars that were sold in the same period of the previous year and consolidate a downward trend in recent months.
A similar situation is experienced by the electric vehicle segment, which only in May of this year managed to sell 242 units, a reduction of 25.1 percent compared to 323 units who enrolled in the same month of the previous year.

It should be noted that May has not been the worst month for the segment during 2023, since January only increased 179 units, 54.3 percent less than the 392 cars of this type that were marketed in 2022.

units, a drop of 15.7 percent compared to the 1,659 in the same period of the previous year.

So far in 2023, only 1,399 units of electric vehicles have been sold.
It seems that the increases that were registered in 2022 compared to 2021 are already history. In the first five months of these contrasting years, Colombians went from buying 462 units to about 1,659, which represented a segment growth of 259.1 percent.

The evolution of the sale of hybrid cars in Colombia
A similar situation, but to a lesser extent, through the country’s hybrid vehicle market. Andemos analyzes this sector in two: the first, which is HEV or ‘Hybrid Electric Vehicle’, cars that combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, and PHEV or ‘Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle’, which are similar to the above, but with a key difference: it can be charged by plugging it into an external electricity source.
For the first group, only 2,125 units were registered in May, a reduction of 15.3 percent compared to the 2,509 that were sold in the same month of the previous year.
Regarding the results of the first five months of 2023, the sale of 8,499 HEV vehicles has been registered, which compared with the 8,819 of the same period of the previous year represents a slight reduction of 3.6 percent.

The drop in the second group corresponding to PHEVs is milder. This had sales in May that reached 219 units, 0.5 percent less of the 220 that were sold in the same month of the previous year.
The situation is replicated for the results of the first five months of this year. During the period, 1,027 cars of this type were registered, 6.1 percent less than the 1,094 of the previous year.
The brands that have sold the most electric and hybrid vehicles in Colombia
Although in general all brands have experienced reductions in vehicle sales, Toyota has remained on the podium and in May it is the one that has sold the most electric and hybrid vehicles, with 1,150 units; in second place is Suzuki, with 405 cars; Mazda ranks third, with 292; Mercedes Benz, with 110; and in fifth place is Nissan, with 102.
