The attempt by the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to block the largest agreement in history in the video game sector was stopped, after Microsoft Corp. obtained the approval of a court to go ahead with the purchase of Activision Blizzard Inc. for $69 billion.
The company landed a top deal of $25 billion by getting Elon Musk to buy Twitter for $40 billion.
Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley of San Francisco said that Microsoft will be able to close the merger with the Activision studio before July 18 in all jurisdictions except the UK, which is the only place to veto the deal in May.
According to Microsoft, the objective of the agreement is to give it greater use in games for mobile devices since the studio owns King, the creator of Candy Crush.
With this alliance, Microsoft will have third place among the world’s video game companies, behind China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd., publisher of League of Legends, and its rival in the console sector Sony Corp.

The company will continue to operate completely autonomously.

According to Microsoft President Brad Smith, the San Francisco court’s decision should apply in other jurisdictions and the firm will continue working to achieve a timely and favorable resolution.
“As we have consistently demonstrated throughout this process, we are committed to working creatively and collaboratively to address regulatory concerns,” the manager said.
The settlement that reached the FTC
The Federal Trade Commission tried to temporarily block the purchase and had spent five days with expert interviews and testimony from both parties to determine the potential monopoly that would result from the acquisition.
The judge’s ruling now allows Microsoft to close its deal with Activision Blizzard, only if the company does soBefore the July 18 date the FTC completes its own investigation.
Also, the company must be willing to close in the UK or if the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is willing to negotiate some sort of remedy.
The FTC will now have the ability to appeal Judge Corley’s decision by 11:59 p.m.
But, if the injunction is upheld, this would be the second big loss for FTC Chair Lina Khan as head of the regulator, but among the gains, the FTC has ended the mergers between Lockheed Martin Corp. and Aerojet Rocketdyne. Holdings Inc. as well as Nvidia Corp.’s offer to acquire Arm from SoftBank Group Corp.

Activision Blizzard has a network of almost 500 million monthly active users in 196 countries and has 3 video game developers for different platforms.

Activision said the deal will benefit consumers and workers.
Microsoft will receive a boost and will be left with titles like Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile. According to analytics company NewZoo, mobile gaming is the fastest growing segment of the industry and is valued at US$92 billion, half the world market.
Competitors fear that Microsoft will use its newfound advantage to undermine competitors like Sony, reduce access to their best-selling titles or publishing more exclusive games for Xbox and PC.
