have a son It is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. to bring a new human being into this world, which is already a very important issue, it must be analyzed whether there are sufficient resources to give a son everything he needs.
The saying that “each child comes with a piece of bread under his arm” already has little truth due to the current cost of food, support, studies, and clothing for a child.
The Ean University put figures on the matter and carried out a study to determine how much a child costs in Colombia in 12 cities of the country.

According to information collected by Rate AnalyticalThe analysis concluded that the cost of having a child in Colombia depends on variables such as socioeconomic status, family composition, income, biological sex, city, and number of children.
The director of master’s degrees at Universidad Ean, Omar Alonso Patiño, who led the study, points out that there are several items that a child demands. “In this study, different categories of spending have also been considered: food, education, hygiene and cleanliness, furniture, leisure and entertainment, health, technology and clothing,” he said.
The EAN study was applied in 12 main cities of the country with more than five hundred thousand inhabitants: Armenia, Barranquilla, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartagena, Ibagué, Manizales, Medellín, Neiva, Pereira and Villavicencio.
The analysis was divided into four large age groups: from 0 to 4 years, when the children are still in kindergarten; from 4 to 11 years old, of school age; from 11 to 18 years old when they start high school or entering university and from 18 years onwards.
In addition, it was applied to all socioeconomic strata (1 to 6) and in volume of income, 1 SMLV was taken into account up to more than 40 SMLV.
What are the main results of the study?
By cities, the main results of the study are that in Bogotá the maintenance of a child can generate costs of a maximum of 2,447 SMLV, in Manizales this value can reach 1,262 SMLV, in Neiva the maximum expense is around 1,209 SMLV.

That is to say, in the capital of the country it is necessary to have $2,838,520 (at the value of the minimum wage in 2023) to support a child. While in Manizales it is time to have $1,463,920.
However, Bogotá is not the most expensive city to have a child. Cities like Ibagué and Manizales exceed 1,100 SMLV, while Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Medellín and Pereira, on average, have between 1,000 and 1,100 SMLV in the highest strata.

More than 50 years ago, a family would adapt acceptably if it was made up of a father, mother and children.
The study shows that a female daughter generates an average of 10% more expenses than a male child.
Supporting a child in a family made up of a father, a son and one or more grandparents is more expensive than supporting him in a family made up of a female head of the household and a child or children. In the first case it costs 788 SMLV, while in the second case it costs 280 SMLV.
By age range, in which the greatest amount of expenses for the family is generated is between 11 and 18 years of age (415 SMLV), followed by the range between 18 years and financial independence of the child (392 SMLV).
The lowest expense is generated from the moment a couple decides to conceive a child until the age of 4, at which time there are expenses of 202 SMLV.
Education represents a significant cost. For a family in Medellín, it can be at 768 SMLV and in Cali 888 SMLV.
