In his Sunday column for EL TIEMPO, Former President Germán Vargas Lleras described as “a great story” that Colombia seeks to be a “world power of green energy”, under the mandate of President Gustavo Petro.

The head of Cambio Radical said he was in favor of the energy transition, but questioned the steps that Petro has taken during these months in the Casa de Nariño that could have repercussions on Colombians. According to him, “the situation is worrisome” because the clean energy projects awarded in La Guajira and the Caribbean have not come into operation.
“The risk of shortages is real, and even more so when it is confirmed, with a possibility of more than 80%, that in the next semester we will have to face again the so-called El Niño phenomenon, with strong and perhaps prolonged droughts,” he said.

Based on his analysis, with the growth in energy demand and the non-operation of said projects and other transmission infrastructure works -GEB and ISA-, there is concern about the risk of a possible blackout.

The risk of shortages is real
For him, the complexities are not only with the delay of the current projects; He assures that now “it has become impossible to obtain a license” for futures on behalf of entities and after consulting communities, such as indigenous peoples.
“The way in which the Government itself has encouraged them to demand, not to say extort, investors is already reflected in the fact that, for example, in La Guajira it is possible that not a single wind farm can be developed in the coming years,” judgment.

In his column for this newspaper, Vargas Lleras reiterated that this added “bad signs for investors”, “the failed intervention of the Energy and Gas Regulation Commission (Creg)”, led to Colombia failing to reduce energy rates and may “suffer rationing or blackouts that we thought were overcome.”
