Coffee growers: this is the profile and schedule for choosing a manager – Sectors – Economy

After the definition of the profile and the calendar of the process by the National Committee of Coffee Growers, the call to apply as a candidate for the position of General Manager of the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC) to replace Roberto Vélez Vallejo, who resigned in December after President Gustavo Petro asked him to leave management.

The name of the general manager of the Federation, who will have the challenge of maintaining union unity and continuing to improve on economic, social and environmental issues, will finally be known on next April 18.

«An absolutely essential requirement: the general manager must not only have a demonstrated, high-level management experience of at least a decade, in the public or private sector,» said the Minister of Finance and Public Credit, José Antonio ocampo.

The 15 highest union representatives and the ministers of Finance and Public Credit, Agriculture and Rural Development, Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the National Director of Planning, as representatives of the national government, have seats in the National Committee of Coffee Growers.

Currently, the FNC brings together 540,000 producer families. Coffee is grown on 842,399 hectares, in 604 of the country’s 1,123 municipalities, and its production represents 21 percent of agricultural GDP.

What profile should applicants have?

In Resolution 1 of 2023 issued by the National Committee The professional and personal characteristics that those interested in participating in the election process for the new general manager of the FNC must meet are detailed.

Among them, the person must have both a domestic and global vision that allows them to face the national and international challenges that lie ahead and have the ability to lead the FNC, upon reaching its first centenary, to lead the sustainability and prosperity of coffee families.

The profile of the manager must gather qualities of closeness, solidarity, social sensitivity, managerial capacity and the ability to lead and carry out the union’s priorities.

In addition to this, the profile of the next manager must gather qualities of leadership, solidarity, social sensitivity, managerial capacity and the ability to lead and carry out the union’s priorities and project it into the future.

Other requirements are to generate trust and convergence in all the actors in the coffee production, marketing and value chain; as well as stimulate internal consumption, strengthen the commercialization of specialty coffees or have knowledge or experience in the real sector, preferably the coffee sector.

Among the basic requirements that candidates must meet is: being a Colombian citizen by birth, being an upright professional or having good dialogue with the national government, ensuring the independence of the union and looking after the interests of coffee growers above all.

Apart from all these qualities, those interested in applying must certify before the General Secretariat of the FNC that they are not subject to statutory, regulatory and legal incompatibilities and incompatibilities. For example, you may not have received popular election posts in the immediately preceding year either.

What is the schedule?

-February 1st: The call for the process to integrate the shortlist for the election of the general manager will be published.

-From February 2 to 23: The resumes of the applicants will be received with the corresponding documentary supports and their annexes. Everything must be sent to the email of the General Secretariat of the FN: convocatoriaGGFNC@cafedecolombia.com.co

-From February 24 to March 8: Analysis of the resumes, the documentary supports and the corresponding annexes, in order to review compliance with the requirements established in the call.

-March 9: The Steering Committee will meet and evaluate the resumes received and will make a selection of a maximum of 10 based on the established criteria and profile.

-From March 13 to 17: The National Committee will meet and analyze the 10 resumes selected by the Steering Committee with the documentary supports and their annexes and will agree on and approve the names that will make up the shortlist to be presented to the National Congress of Coffee Growers. At least one of the shortlisted members must be a woman.

-From March 21 to 31: The shortlisted candidates will present their proposals and/or programs to each of the 15 departmental committees of coffee growers at their respective headquarters. The FNC will establish the schedule and the rules for the presentation of the candidates and will finance the tour of the candidates to the headquarters of the committees.

-April 18th: An Extraordinary Coffee Congress will be held to elect the new manager from the shortlist presented by the Committee.
