Remittances to their families from workers living abroad may have come very close to a record $10 billion. Until November they were at US$ 8,580 million, with a growth of 10.5%.

However, for those who receive these resources, when converted into pesos, the average growth during the year was, until November, of 24.8% by work and grace of the harsh devaluation.

The largest businesses in the hemisphere

Colombia was in four of the 20 largest recent businesses in Latin America, according to the information available for the latest ECLAC report. Brazil’s Hypera bought Takeda’s pharmaceutical businesses in Colombia and other countries; the Swedish company Essity bought Familia in Colombia; ISA bought a Pbte from Brazil; Cuadrado, from the US, bought the Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Barranquilla. It added US$ 2,044 million.

86 percent of companies, public entities and universities in the country do not do research and development, according to a Dane survey. One in four universities does not investigate, and if they are private, it is one in three.

In industry, 83 percent of companies do not do this activity, but if they are public industries, the proportion drops to 69 percent. In non-profit entities, 79 percent do not do any research.

2022, a year worth eight

Colombia’s inflation in 2022 was 13.12 percent, which made it the highest in the last 23 years. This result contrasts with the inflation of just two years ago, since in 2020 prices only rose 1.61 percent.

At the rate at which prices were rising at that time, it would take eight years to accumulate the increases in the prices of the family basket that Colombians endured alone during the past year.
