The idea is that through the regeneration of materials, materials are given a second life, turning them into cement and concrete, responding to the fulfillment of their CO2 reduction goals by 40 percent by 2040 and the carbon neutrality by 2050.

Alejandro Ramírez, president of Cemex in Colombia and Peru, explained the initiative that allows avoiding final disposal in open-air sanitary landfills, which has become an alternative that is not sustainable over time and generates greater risks for municipalities every day.

What kind of company is this?

regenerates is a new subsidiary of Cemex in Colombia, dedicated to offering circularity solutions, which includes collection, separation, recovery and co-processing of waste, from all productive sectors and municipalities.

The above taking into account that cemex It has the capacity to consume non-biodegradable residual materials such as plastics, tires, demolition debris, cardboard, among many others, to recycle them in its production processes or to transform them into alternative fuels to replace fossil sources such as coal. In addition, they can be converted into raw materials to produce cement and concrete.

What differences does it have with respect to other company strategies?

More than a strategy or initiative, regenerates is a new business unit of cemex with which we have the goal of venturing into the use of waste in order to achieve the goals against climate change.

This is our commitment to recycle material and manufacture cement and concrete, and the company has all the potential to be economically sustainable, and to be an ally of the entire productive sector and regional authorities in the responsible and efficient management of solid waste, which Today, to a large extent, they are disposed of in sanitary landfills.

Does this align with innovation within the company?

Regenera is a clear example of innovation in the company, to which we have invested four million dollars, and we hope it will be more over time.

Cemex has been recognized worldwide as a manufacturer of construction materials, now we are betting on a completely new line of business, focused on a problem such as the growing production of industrial and urban waste in Colombia. We take advantage of our industrial infrastructure and our experience to revalue waste from practically all sectors of the country’s economy.

What other alternatives are working?

We are working on several fronts to continue being one of the leading companies in the construction materials industry, but always focused on our goal of rreduce net CO2 emissions by 47 percent by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

In this sense, our efforts are focused on increasing the sales of cement and concrete Vertua reduced in carbon, carry out specific operations to contribute to the circular economy (as is the case of Regenera), decarbonize our operations, protect biodiversity and water resources close to ours, strengthen alliances with actors who are working on sustainability and be promoters of the message against climate action around the world.
