Alert, sharp drop in milk consumption and excess production in the country – Sectors – Economy

Milk producers in Colombia launched a new alert due to the drop in the consumption of liquid and its derivatives by households and a greater supply of milk in the country. Only last May the consumption of this product has decreased by 6.5 percent, According to records from the consulting firm Raddar, Asoleche’s directives warned.

The drop in May is added to the 9.7 percent decrease in the consumption of milk and its products registered last year, says the union of milkmen in the country.

“Climatic variations have increased the milk supply at this time; however, Demand has been a limitation to guarantee the flow of the market, reproduced at all the links in the chain” assured Andrea González, executive president of Asoleche.

The situation is further complicated, in the midst of high inflation for the basic food basket of Colombians.

From said union they also warn that public order and difficulties with road infrastructure have exacerbated the situation, especially in Cauca, Nariño, Valle del Cauca and Caquetá, Territories that are characterized by small and medium producers who find it difficult to market their product.

This type of situation, due to the seasonality of production due to climatic reasons, generates high volatility in income and instability for the chain.

“Asoleche expresses its commitment to the search for structural solutions that allow it to continue bringing nutrition to Colombian homes, create a stable scenario of investment and growth for all the actors and encourage the economic and social development of the country” emphasized the union leader
